The project in its totality will result in the phased modernization of the existing engineering complex as well as the addition of an expansion of approximately 15,000 m2. This project includes teaching, engineering research, administrative and support spaces as well as upgrading of public circulation and lounge type spaces.
This is a three phase project; with the project duration will likely occur over an extended period of between five and eight years, dependent upon government approvals and receipt of funding from government and other sources. Funding for Phase 1 has been confirmed.
Phase 1 (Base Building Preservation) includes:
Common area abatement; washroom renewal; exterior door and entrance renewal; wood window replacement; MCC (Motor Control Centre) renewal; BMS (Building Management System) renewal; mechanical equipment renewal; centrally controlled theatre renovation; fire alarm replacement; sprinkler backbone and select extension, life safety and code upgrades, selected functional upgrades; energy efficiency projects, including lighting retrofits and mechanical upgrades; functional renewal of selected teaching, research and support spaces. It also includes strategic lifecycle equipment and systems replacement.
Phase 2 will encompass the expansion of the existing Engineering Complex including any required and outstanding code upgrades to the existing complex. It will provide decanting space to facilitate Phase 3 as well as meeting current and future needs for well-serviced learning and research space.
Phase 3 encompasses the balance of preservation, lifecycle and adaptive space renewal outstanding at the completion of Phases 1 and 2.
The project began November, 2009 and is expected to be completed March, 2011.
