EllisDon Employees Raise over $100K for Haiti Relief Efforts

MISSISSAUGA, January 29, 2010 – The employees of EllisDon truly showed their generous spirit over the last couple of weeks with the money they were able to raise for relief efforts in earthquake ravaged Haiti. In total, over $100,000 was raised by the employees; and, as the company will match all donations, this means that in total over $200,000 will be donated to relief efforts.

 

On Thursday, January 14, EllisDon’s President and CEO Geoff Smith sent out a company-wide communication, asking employees to donate whatever they could. The next day the company set up payroll deduction for donations to make it easier for employees to contribute. By the end of this first day, in only 8 hours, almost $30,000 had been raised. Over the next couple of days almost half of the company’s employees had already responded and the amount more than doubled. After less than two weeks the company had managed to raise $101,770. 

 

In addition to the payroll deductions there were other separate events that were held to help raise money for relief efforts, including a multicultural lunch, where employees brought in a variety of foods from different ethnicities. 

 

Stated Mr. Smith: “When I look at how quickly and aggressively our employees responded to the need for help, I am reminded of the sorts of values that permeate this company. The people of EllisDon continue to inspire me with their generosity.”

 

The money raised will be split between two organizations: www.onexone.org and www.care.ca. ONEXONE works in partnership with local organizations around the world to implement a number of charitable programs that align with their goal to “alleviate suffering and preserve the lives of children”. CARE is a Canadian organization that works with approximately 65 counties around the world in communities that need help. As one of the first agencies to respond in emergencies like natural disasters, CARE works with local partners to create lasting solutions to end poverty.
