SickKids Research Tower

EllisDon was awarded the contract for the new construction of the SickKids Research Tower in downtown Toronto. The new home for the Research Institute it will consist of a 21-storey, 750,000 square foot building. This new tower will consolidate research and education currently spread across a number of buildings within the downtown Toronto Discovery District.

The different areas of research will be reflected in seven neighbourhoods of science that are connected through staircases and shared spaces to encourage cross-collaboration.  The Research neighbourhoods span two to three floors and are connected by atrium spaces.  The tower will also house new learning and teaching facilities for SickKids Learning Institute including a 250 seat lecture theatre, flexible learning spaces and display area. This state of the art research facility also includes, tele-education facilities, meting rooms, two new pathways to connect the Research and Learning Tower to SickKids McMaster and Atrium buildings.  The building is primarily curtain wall with limited zinc siding.  The heating and cooling systems consist of cooling towers, chillers and heat exchangers.  Diesel generators provide backup power.

Designed to achieve LEED Gold, the facility is expected to set the standard for energy efficiency and sustainable infrastructure in Toronto’s Discovery District.  Approximately 2,000 staff will be relocated to the new facility.

The project began April 2010 and is expected to be completed April 2013.
