UPDATE: Statement Regarding Incident at Cavendish Farms Lethbridge Plant Project

LETHBRIDGE, A.B. – EllisDon confirmed an employee of a sub-contractor was found this morning unresponsive at the construction site of the new Cavendish Farms Lethbridge plant. The individual was transported to hospital and has since passed away.

John Zalik, an employee of Lafarge Northwest, was well-respected and well-liked by everyone from colleagues to customers, company general manager Mike Schmidtler said.

"We lost a real leader here. A lot of our employees are quite distraught," Schmidtler said. "It's a huge loss emotionally to us."

The incident has been reported to Occupational Health and Safety Alberta and local police.  Work has been ceased at the area of the incident for investigation. EllisDon is co-operating fully with investigators and is providing Employee Assistance for anyone in need.

Alberta Labour spokesperson Trent Bancarz said investigators have determined the 57-year-old man died from a medical event that was not related to the workplace.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time.
