The Story

The Eglinton Crosstown LRT (ECLRT) is a landmark project for the City of Toronto, the Province of Ontario and the Canadian Public-Private-Partnership market. The new system will provide Toronto commuters with a seamless customer experience between the new LRT stations and the existing subway system, increased reliability for passengers, reduced traffic congestion and improved quality of life for commuters. The ECLRT will be a 19.7 km long line, including 25 stations and stops running along Eglinton Avenue from Mount Dennis (in the west) to Kennedy (in the east). EllisDon is a key partner in the design, construction, financing and maintaining of this project, the largest Public-Private-Partnership deal in Canadian history.

The scope of work for this project includes 25 stations and stops, connections to three subway stations and several GO Transit lines, and a 10 km underground portion between Mount Dennis (Weston Road) and east of Laird Drive. The ECLRT will include an “at-grade” section, which has approximately 8.6 km long with 10 stops in a semi-exclusive right-of-way (separate from regular surface traffic) and with priority signalling at intersections for the Revenue Vehicles. This section, although referred to as “at-grade”, includes two underground stations (in box tunnel) - Don Mills and Kennedy – with the latter containing important links to the subway and GO Transit. In addition, a new Eglinton Maintenance and Storage Facility, located at the intersection of Eglinton Avenue and the CP/GO Transit line at Mount Dennis station, will be built. The ECLRT will include a track and systems in the twin-bore tunnelled section, approximately 10.2 km long.

Construction is scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2021 and the first departure is planned for October 2021. During operations, EllisDon will be a key member of the maintenance team that will carry out maintenance and rehabilitation of the Project Co System Infrastructure (including the vehicles and the tunnels) for 30 years.
