Building Information Modeling at EllisDon

The goal of the client should be to reduce risk before tender and keep the premium for unknowns to an absolute minimum. EllisDon’s goal is to help to facilitate this process.

The term Building Information Modeling (BIM) is being used throughout the industry to describe the process of working with 3D models, containing layers of associated information, to fully coordinate, analyze, simulate and describe all aspects of a project.

This process creates a purpose-built, dimensionally accurate 3D model to rationalize risk, identify issues in the contract documents and clearly delineate scope for even the most complex building systems.  

This model may be sum of many contributions from the various stake holders in the design and construction process or commissioned as part of Pre-Construction Services as a stand alone exercise using the best information available. It is in the client’s interest to engage in this process before tender in order to have the most significant impact on risk and therefore the project cost.

EllisDon currently leverages a combination of many softwares and processes for the benefit of all disciplines involved in the project delivery for;

• 3D Analysis – animated constructability simulations, Pro forma linked energy analysis, value engineering “what if” scenarios etc.
• 3D Coordination & submissions – Trade submissions are coordinated in the virtual environment using a combination of clash detection and manual systematic review.
• 4D Scheduling - An animated 3D simulation of the master project schedule or specific complex activities.
• 3D Quantity Estimating – selective & accurate quantity extraction from 3D data.
• 3D Asbuilts & Point Cloud Surveying – 3D geometry of existing conditions or asbuilt conditions are verified using a millions of points collected from the any visible surface in matter of minutes.
• XYZ project control – Information is extracted from the coordinated 3D model allowing the site layout to be performed using sophisticated equipment to control and accurately direct site activities.
• 3D Database for FM & Asset Management - EllisDon has developed a process to allow the model to be used for facilities management and asset management acting as a custom repository and real-time database.

The BIM process allows better planning & execution through communication & clarity. EllisDon ultimately builds more efficiently which reduces risk and significantly improves our client’s experience.
