The Story
EllisDon, in joint venture with VCM Contractors & Engineers Ltd. of Saskatoon, was awarded a $150 million Engineer-Procure-Construct Contract with Terra Grain Fuels Ethanol Facility of Regina, Saskatchewan. The project involved the construction of a 150 million litres per year wheat-based ethanol facility on a 160-acre greenfield site.

This complex design-build project required EllisDon and their partners to construct a 185,000 SF facility that includes leading-edge process technology which was sourced throughout Europe and North America. The construction team placed 9,000 cubic metres of concrete, 1,020 tonnes of structural steel, 16,200 metres of large diameter process piping and over 100 kilometres of electrical cabling.

As this project was located in the remote area of Belle Plaine, Saskatchewan, there were several logistical challenges that the team needed to overcome, such as the distance to material manufacturers suppliers. The team planned out delivery items well in advance to ensure that all items arrived on site before installation, which improved quality control inspections while maintaining the project schedule.
