EllisDon Celebrates Grand Opening of the Ken and Marilyn Thomson Patient Care Centre Project at Michael Garron Hospital

Mississauga, ON, January 11, 2022 — Today, EllisDon celebrates a major milestone with the grand opening of the Ken and Marilyn Thomson Patient Care Centre at Michael Garron Hospital (MGH) in East Toronto. As the centrepiece of MGH’s campus transformation, the Thomson Centre is the largest redevelopment project in the hospital’s history.

“EllisDon’s ability to execute this highly challenging project stems from our culture of great people who are dedicated and determined to persevere through anything; it's for this reason that we continue to be one the world’s premier healthcare builders,” said Andrew Anderson, Senior Vice President & Toronto Area Manager, EllisDon.

The 550,000 square foot, 8-storey tower adds a total of 215 beds and will provide essential healthcare for over 400,000 residents across East Toronto. New features include two inpatient mental health units, surgery inpatient unit, outpatient chronic disease unit, a medical education centre, a simulation centre, and various public areas.

“We’re extremely proud to have reached this monumental milestone on the new Thomson Centre,” said Anderson. “This project was a massive undertaking and its successful completion was as a result of the outstanding teams behind it and the collective efforts put forth during some unprecedented challenges.”

Beginning in 2018, the $498-million project was constructed in partnership with EllisDon, Infrastructure Ontario, and the Ministry of Health.

EllisDon, through its in-house suite of services, took on the lead role of Developer (EllisDon Capital Inc.), Design-Builder (EllisDon Design Build Inc.), and Financial Advisor (EllisDon Capital Inc.). Other key partners who were integral in making this project a success include B+H Architects and Diamond Schmitt Architects, Mulvey & Banani International Inc., Crossey Engineering Ltd., Stephenson Engineering Ltd. and WalterFedy.

With doors at the Thomson Centre now open, the project will continue until 2024 with renovations to approximately 100,000 square feet of select areas, decommissioning of outdated wings, and new greenery and landscaping to welcome the community to the new facility.
