In an industry built on strength, teamwork, and trust, the environment behind the work matters just as much as what gets built.

At EllisDon, that means creating a workplace where people feel respected, supported, and able to show up as themselves, something that hasn’t always been a given in construction.

“Visibility, inclusion, and representation matter—especially in workplaces where many people have historically felt they needed to hide parts of themselves to succeed,” said Seamus Kiely, Superintendent, EllisDon.

At EllisDon, that understanding shapes how inclusion is approached, not as a single initiative, but as something embedded in the culture, strengthened through community, and reinforced through action.

Creating a culture of everyday respect

Inclusion often starts with the everyday interactions that define a workplace. Across EllisDon’s job sites and offices, the expectation is clear: respect isn’t conditional, it’s foundational.

That standard is especially important in industries where openness has not always felt accessible. Building a workplace where people feel comfortable being themselves takes time and consistency. It shows up in how teams communicate, support one another, and create space for different perspectives.

Supporting employees through community

Alongside culture, community plays a critical role.

At EllisDon, that’s where PEACE (Proud Employees for Allyship, Community, and Education) comes in—an employee-led group dedicated to supporting LGBTQ2S+ employees and fostering connection across the organization and the broader construction industry.

Through PEACE, employees have a space to share experiences, build relationships, and contribute to a more inclusive workplace, helping ensure no one feels isolated in their experience. The group also plays an active role in advancing inclusion in visible and meaningful ways, from supporting Pride participation across the country to leading education and awareness efforts that strengthen allyship across teams.

Its impact extends beyond internal connection. Initiatives such as flying Pride flags at worksites, contributing to company-wide inclusion campaigns, and supporting the development of resources like EllisDon’s Gender Affirmation and Transition Guide reflect a broader commitment to creating safe, respectful environments.

Pride as more than a moment

Pride Month helps bring visibility to these efforts, but the work doesn’t begin or end in June.

Across EllisDon, teams participate in Pride events nationwide, demonstrating support for the LGBTQ2S+ community and reinforcing a shared commitment to inclusion, both within the workplace and in the communities where they build. These efforts reflect the values that guide how teams work together year-round.

“Pride reflects values every strong workplace should stand for: dignity, safety, teamwork, and mutual respect,” said Kiely. “The best teams are built on trust—and people work better together when they know they’ll be respected for who they are.”

At EllisDon, those values are closely tied to how teams perform and collaborate. A culture rooted in trust enables people to contribute fully and work more effectively together.

That commitment to inclusion continues to evolve through employee-led groups like PEACE, through policies that support individuals, and through the everyday actions that define workplace culture.

Progress doesn’t come from perfection, it comes from continued effort, openness, and a willingness to keep learning.

That ongoing effort is what defines a strong workplace; not just what gets built, but the environment created for the people building it.
