TTC Project Spotlight: The Civil Infrastructure Between Here and There

From daily commutes and campus visits to family gatherings and weekend plans, millions of journeys start and end on Toronto's transit network. For decades, EllisDon has played a role in shaping the infrastructure behind those journeys, helping create new connections, renew aging infrastructure, and improve accessibility across some of the TTC's busiest stations.

While our work can be seen throughout the network, few projects illustrate it better than the transformation underway at Warden Station. Currently undergoing a major redevelopment, Warden Station is being reimagined as a fully accessible, modern transit hub while remaining operational for the thousands of passengers who rely on it every day. Expected to be complete by the end of 2027, the redevelopment will introduce a new accessible entrance, elevators connecting all station levels, new escalators, a street-level bus terminal, upgraded passenger amenities, retail and operational spaces, a dedicated passenger pick-up and drop-off area, and station-wide electrical upgrades.

One of the biggest challenges is that the work is taking place while Warden Station remains open and operational. Construction is happening alongside active subway and bus operations, requiring extensive enabling works, temporary transit facilities, major earthworks and carefully planned staging to minimize impacts to riders. From temporary bus loops and retaining walls to utility and infrastructure relocations, every phase of the project has been carefully planned to keep people moving while the station is rebuilt around them. 

Beyond Warden Station, EllisDon has supported accessibility upgrades at several TTC stations through the Easier Access Program. At Sherbourne, Lawrence and Castle Frank Stations, the work has included the installation of elevators connecting street, concourse and platform levels, barrier-free entrances, upgraded wayfinding, and the integration of new mechanical, electrical and communications systems within existing station infrastructure. Delivering those improvements in active subway stations required phased constructionand close coordination with TTC operations teams to keep stations functioning safely throughout construction.

Our ability to deliver complex work while maintaining transit operations has been applied across a range of TTC projects. At Union Station, our team doubled platform capacity, expanded concourse space and improved passenger circulation within one of Canada's busiest transportation hubs. Similarly, at Victoria Park Station, an aging elevated bus terminal was replaced with a modern at-grade facility, complete with accessibility improvements, expanded commuter amenities and upgraded passenger connections.

Our relationship with the TTC stretches back more than 40 years to projects like the Scarborough RT (Line 3 Scarborough), where EllisDon contributed to the construction of a portion of the elevated guideway that served communities across Scarborough. While the line has since been retired, the project marked the beginning of a long-standing partnership that has continued as Toronto's transit network has evolved and expanded.

As we reflect on the network today,it's clear that transit infrastructure isn'tjust about stations, tracks and bus terminals - it's also about the connections they create. EllisDon has helped build the spaces behind millions of journeys across Toronto and as the city continues to grow, we look forward to helping deliver the infrastructure that supports the next generation of riders.
