Sustainability
At EllisDon, sustainability isn’t an afterthought and it’s more than a commitment, it’s ingrained in our DNA. As a leader in the construction services industry, EllisDon is responsible for protecting and improving the communities in which we work, while considering how to respond to the changing environment. The science is clear — we must reduce the impacts of climate change.
Because buildings and infrastructure make up more than 40% of global emissions, business as usual is no longer an option. It is critical to dramatically reduce global emissions, not only towards net-zero by 2050, but also to make significant reductions immediately. Together with the United Nations and other business leaders, EllisDon is responding to the urgent call-to-action for all companies to set emissions reduction targets in line with a 1.5°C future.
We are actively working to reduce our carbon emissions, reduce our impact on the environment and meaningfully contribute to the fight against climate change. Educating our people and our industry on the importance of carbon reduction and resource efficiency is a priority and more crucial than ever before.

Over Floe
EllisDon donated waste materials from one of our projects to local artist John Notten. The materials were used to create Over Floe - a public art project ArtWorxTO: Year of Public Art 2021-22. The installation was designed to bring awareness to the detrimental effects of human-caused global warming.

Carbon Emissions Reduction at Royal Columbian Hospital
At our Royal Columbian Hospital, we initiated a collaborative approach to quantify and reduce carbon emissions in the concrete supply. Working with the concrete supplier, structural engineer, and site superintendents, we evaluated each concrete mix for specified performance characteristics and schedule implications, including critical path impact. As a team, we determined opportunities to maximize reductions of carbon emissions, through the use of Supplementary Cementitious Materials, changes to the aggregate, and extending cure times. Through this exercise, we were able to identify emissions reductions of approximately 20% when compared to industry available baselines, without incurring additional costs or impacting the schedule.
