For 75 years, EllisDon has built its reputation by looking beyond conventional boundaries, continuously expanding how it supports clients at every stage of a project.

What began as delivering complex construction projects has grown into a broader, more integrated approach. As client needs evolved, so did the role EllisDon played, extending earlier into planning, deeper into delivery, and further into long-term operations.

Driven by an entrepreneurial mindset, this progression unfolded over time, shaped by where clients needed more support and where projects demanded greater continuity.

“What’s changed isn’t just the complexity of projects—it’s the expectations around them,” said Wayne Ferguson, President, Infrastructure Services. “Clients are being asked to deliver more certainty, more accountability, and better long-term outcomes. That requires a different level of partnership, where you’re not stepping in at one moment, but understanding how every stage connects and influences the next.”

Time and again, EllisDon made deliberate choices: when clients needed support beyond traditional construction, the company built the expertise to meet those needs.

Today, that evolution is reflected in a comprehensive Services offering that supports clients from early advisory through to long-term performance.

Laying the Groundwork: The Early 2000s

In the early 2000s, EllisDon began to see a clear pattern. Clients were increasingly seeking input earlier, before design was finalized, and looking for guidance on strategy, risk, and key decisions.

In response, EllisDon established Project Advisory & Management (PA&M), creating a dedicated service focused on bringing construction expertise into the earliest phases of a project.

Today, PA&M supports owners as a strategic partner, helping define scope, align priorities, and set projects up for success. Its work includes large-scale national rollouts for McDonald’s Canada and Cineplex, advisory support for Ontario House during the Vancouver 2010 Olympics, and leadership in complex recovery efforts following the Jasper wildfires in 2024.

Choosing to Stay After Handover: Early–Mid 2000s

As projects grew more complex, and more publicly accountable, the idea that delivery ends at substantial completion began to shift.

Healthcare projects were among the first to highlight this need. Facilities, such as West Park Healthcare Centre and Royal Inland Hospital, require consistent, high-performing operations long after opening day.

Rather than stepping away at handover, EllisDon expanded its role to remain engaged beyond construction, helping clients operate and maintain increasingly complex assets.

Facilities Services grew from this approach, enabling long-term operation and maintenance of assets, while carrying forward knowledge gained during design and construction. This continuity helps reduce inefficiencies, streamline operations, and create a more seamless experience for clients.

Closing the Gap Between “Built” and “Ready”: Mid 2000s

As EllisDon extended its involvement beyond construction, another challenge became increasingly clear: one of the most critical phases of a project was also one of the most fragmented.

Furniture, fixtures, and equipment were often managed separately, introducing added complexity and coordination challenges for clients already navigating large-scale projects.

To address this, a more integrated approach was developed.

Furniture, Equipment & Design (FED) brings planning, procurement, installation, and activation under one team. From healthcare facilities like South Niagara Hospital and West Lincoln Memorial Hospital to sports and manufacturing environments, this approach ensures that spaces are not only built, but also fully operational, safe, and ready from day one.

Going Global: The 2010s

As these services took shape, demand extended beyond Canada.

EllisDon’s Middle East & North Africa (MENA) team has operated across the Middle East and North Africa for over 20 years, supporting complex, large-scale developments.

This includes work in Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Cultural District, where teams have contributed to projects, such as the Natural History Museum and teamLab Phenomena, as well as masterplan-scale developments like the Diriyah North District in Riyadh.

Across regions and sectors, from infrastructure to healthcare to cultural institutions, this work reflects the strength and scalability of EllisDon’s model of end-to-end project support.

When Technology Became Central to Performance: Mid 2010s

By the mid-2010s, the role of technology in the built environment was rapidly transforming. Digital infrastructure, data, and system integration were becoming central to how buildings perform.

As clients sought greater visibility into asset performance and operational efficiency, these capabilities became an increasingly important part of EllisDon’s services offering.

Energy & Digital Services (EDS) was established to integrate building systems, networks, and operational data to support long-term performance. Solutions, such as EKO, were developed to meet the growing demand for smarter, more connected facilities.

Today, this work supports critical environments across healthcare, transit, and large institutional assets, where efficiency, reliability, and performance are essential.

A Connected Approach to Delivery

What began as individual service offerings has evolved into a more integrated model.

EllisDon’s Services platform now brings together advisory, facilities management, digital integration, and project activation, providing continuity from early planning through long-term operation. This “Cradle-to-Grave” approach reflects a simple principle: projects perform better when every stage is aligned.

That same thinking has guided the evolution of EllisDon’s Services offering. Growth has been driven not by expanding scope for its own sake, but by consistently responding to where clients need more support.

By staying engaged before projects begin, throughout delivery, and long after completion, EllisDon continues to create value at every stage of the lifecycle.

In today’s environment, delivering a project is only part of the equation. Ensuring it performs, sustainably, efficiently, and seamlessly over time is where the real impact is made.
