The Story
A transformative addition to North Bay’s recreational landscape, the new Community Recreation Centre will replace the aging West Ferris facility with a state-of-the-art sports and leisure hub. Designed to meet the Canada Green Building Council’s Zero Carbon Building – Design Standard, the venue will feature two regulation-size hockey rinks, a walking and running track with warm-up zones, climate-controlled spectator areas, and flexible change rooms serving football, soccer, and baseball fields.
The site includes a spacious community room, meeting spaces, and association offices, with full accessibility and barrier-free design exceeding all codes and standards. Extensive site preparation—including rock blasting—sets the stage for construction using cast-in-place concrete, structural steel, and nail-laminated timber. A fully electric system, CO₂ ice plant, and renewable materials contribute to a low-carbon footprint and enhanced energy efficiency.
