University Hospital of Northern British Columbia (UHNBC) Acute Care Tower Phase 1

The Story

EllisDon is proud to serve as the construction contractor for the University Hospital of Northern British Columbia (UHNBC) Acute Care Tower Phase 1 project; a transformative healthcare initiative that will redefine patient care in Northern B.C.

This landmark project, budgeted at $1.579 billion, is being delivered through an innovative Alliance Model, emphasizing collaboration and shared accountability among all partners. Phase 1, currently underway, includes Alliance development, design, and early works to prepare the site for construction of the new facility in 2027, with patient services scheduled to begin in 2031.

The much-needed Acute Care Tower will feature 211 patient rooms and expand vital cardiac, surgical, and mental health programs. Designed as a hub for specialized health services and teaching, the tower will include:

• 12 new operating suites
• Advanced perioperative services
• State-of-the-art cardiac and surgical care areas
• Landscaped outdoor spaces for patient and family well-being

This expansion represents a lifeline for the community, delivering modern, patient-focused care and fostering innovation for generations to come.
