What does it take to build the major, critical civil infrastructure projects needed nationwide in a country as inherently varied and diverse as Canada? How are projects that require hundreds of individuals and complex coordination successfully built on grand scales and in often challenging locations? These projects require care as much as capacity, skill and specificity as much as scalability, and expert engineering bold enough to match lofty visions. EllisDon Civil leverages its unique integrated approach to ensure each aspect of these projects is built to the needs of their communities no matter the size, location, or challenges. Projects such as the Keeyask Hydroelectric Generating Station (Keeyask), West Calgary Ring Road, the Canadian High Arctic Research Station (CHARS), the Toronto Port Lands Flood Protection Project (Port Lands), and major transit projects are all vastly different yet illustrate the impressive capacity EllisDon has to deliver unique projects, in unique locations, to fit unique needs.
From hydroelectric generating stations and major highways to transit and flood protection infrastructure, EllisDon Civil delivers some of Canada's most complex and transformative projects. Nowhere is our ability to deliver complexity at scale in remote regions more evident than at Keeyask. Here, EllisDon successfully delivered a project that included a 695 MW powerhouse, spillway, dams, cofferdams, and 23 km of dykes in northern Manitoba. The team's expertise in remote delivery is also demonstrated by the Canadian High Arctic Research Station (CHARS) in Nunavut, where EllisDon constructed a world-class research campus supporting environmental science, technology, and northern sovereignty initiatives in one of Canada's most challenging environments. To contrast that, in Alberta EllisDon delivered the West Calgary Ring Road North Section, constructing 20 bridges, two interchanges, a flyover, and major Highway 1 improvements while maintaining traffic on one of the region's busiest transportation corridors – demonstrating that EllisDon Civil's construction expertise can be administered effectively regardless of region.
Success on mega-projects is not achieved merely through construction expertise and elevated engineering. It requires precise coordination of people, materials, utilities, stakeholders, and supply chains. No matter the location of the project, teams need to be able to get people and material in the right place at the right time.
EllisDon Civil has repeatedly demonstrated its ability to execute logistics in challenging conditions. Our team managed considerable workforce transportation, material delivery, and site operations for the Keeyask’s 2,000-person camp in northern Manitoba. It coordinated construction of the West Calgary Ring Road next to highways carrying more than 100,000 vehicles daily through detailed phasing and traffic management plans. Lastly, in a major area east of Toronto's downtown core, teams working on the Port Lands successfully managed complex utility integrations and excavated 1.4 million cubic metres of contaminated soil – treating and reusing the majority on site to reduce trucking, waste, and environmental impacts. These projects may not seem like they have much in common with each other, but all required the right people and items in place and extensive coordination to ensure they progressed toward successful delivery every step of the way.
By consolidating its technical construction expertise and logistical capacity within a culture of innovation, EllisDon Civil can approach each unique project through the lens of its own demands. This approach is seen from the start, leveraging Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) to improve design development and constructability, as demonstrated on the Keeyask Hydroelectric Generating Station. On the West Calgary Ring Road, teams developed innovative utility relocation and phased construction strategies to coordinate eight utility providers while delivering 20 bridges, two interchanges, and major Highway 1 improvements under live traffic conditions. At the Canadian High Arctic Research Station (CHARS) in Nunavut, EllisDon applied specialized planning and construction methods to deliver a world-class research campus in one of Canada's most remote and challenging environments. The same mindset has also helped EllisDon deliver major transit projects across Canada, where complex interfaces, constrained corridors, and active communities demand creative solutions that keep projects moving forward. Together, these achievements demonstrate how innovative thinking enables EllisDon Civil to overcome constraints, adjust schedules, and successfully deliver complex infrastructure in any environment.
The projects above highlight what is fundamental to all of EllisDon Civil’s projects – expertise, experience, problem solving, and perseverance. They also demonstrate the breadth of our capabilities. Few contractors can point to experience delivering hydroelectric generating stations in northern Manitoba, world-class research facilities in the Arctic, major urban flood protection works in downtown Toronto, critical highway infrastructure in Alberta, and large-scale transit construction across Canada. Yet despite their differences, each project relied on the same integrated approach that combines construction expertise, logistical excellence, and innovative problem-solving. From dams, cofferdams, highways, bridges, utility systems, and earthworks to transit, environmental infrastructure, and flood protection, EllisDon Civil has built a proven track record of delivering the infrastructure Canadians depend on. Whether in a remote northern community, a growing city, or a dense urban centre, the team is equipped to meet each project's unique requirements and turn ambitious visions into lasting infrastructure.
