A Dream, a Team, and the Start of EllisDon

In 1951, EllisDon began with a simple but ambitious idea: that a small, determined team could build meaningful projects by taking responsibility for every detail and standing behind their work.

Founded by Don Smith and David Ellis Smith, EllisDon started with just four people. The company’s first office was a single room in Don Smith’s home, with his wife, Joan, serving as bookkeeper. Resources were modest, but the vision was clear. That vision, and the commitment of the people behind it, would define the company from the very beginning.

Later that year, operations moved into an old cigar factory, marking an early step forward for the young organization. While EllisDon had no project history at the time, it had something just as important; a close‑knit team willing to take on challenges, learn quickly, and build trust through performance.

That opportunity arrived with EllisDon’s first contract: Northdale Public School, a three‑room public school in North London, Ontario. Valued at $55,000, the project required the same care, accountability, and attention to detail as any large public facility. From day one, EllisDon approached the work with resolve and pride; principles that continue to guide the company today.

In those early days, the founders worked shoulder to shoulder with their team to ensure every aspect of the project was delivered successfully. Joan Smith managed the books with precision at a time when every dollar mattered. The work was personal, responsibility was shared, and success belonged to the entire team.

That first school project marked the beginning of EllisDon’s long‑standing commitment to public infrastructure and community‑building. From a four‑person operation in 1951, the company has grown steadily, one project, one decade at a time, into a global organization of more than 5,000 people.
