Champions of the Crescent: Riding the Wave for Youth Mental Health
On a sunlit July morning, Crescent Beach came alive with cheers, laughter, and the rhythmic splash of paddles. Held at Blackie Spit Park and proudly presented by EllisDon, this annual paddleboard event united teams, sponsors, and community champions in support of youth mental health.
This year’s event raised an incredible $225,433 for Surrey Memorial Hospital’s youth mental health programs. These funds will directly support art and music therapy, sensory interventions, therapeutic writing, and specialized care through the Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Stabilization Unit (CAPSU) and the Youth Mental Health Transition Team.
“At EllisDon, we believe that building strong communities goes far beyond bricks and mortar—it’s about investing in the well-being and future of our youth,” says David McFarlane, Chief Operating Officer & Executive Vice President, Construction, Western Canada. “Champions of the Crescent is a testament to what we can achieve when we come together with purpose and heart. Supporting youth mental health is not just important; it’s essential. These young people are the leaders and visionaries of tomorrow, and by continuing to support initiatives like this, we help ensure they have every opportunity to thrive. That’s why we show up, year after year—because their future shapes ours.”
Why EllisDon Shows Up
EllisDon’s sponsorship of Champions of the Crescent is rooted in more than visibility—it’s a reflection of our values in action. As a company committed to building inclusive, resilient communities, we recognize that mental health is foundational to the well-being of the next generation.
Our involvement reflected not only financial support but also a shared belief in the importance of mental health access for young people across British Columbia. It was a demonstration of our commitment to showing up for the communities where we live and work and standing behind the belief that every young person deserves the opportunity to thrive.
“Mental health is the cornerstone of thriving communities and bright futures. At EllisDon, we recognize that supporting mental well-being isn’t just an organizational priority—it’s a shared responsibility,” says Connie Ellis, Director of Mental Health, EllisDon. “Charities like those supported through Champions of the Crescent have a profound impact: they provide hope, healing, and essential resources to youth and families when they need it most. By coming together, we not only break down stigma but open doors to care, understanding, and new possibilities for every young person.”
This initiative aligns with EllisDon’s broader commitments to community impact, youth development, and inclusive diversity. We continue to invest in initiatives that empower youth and promote well-being—whether that’s on the court, in the classroom, or, in this case, on the water.
