A New Way to Experience the Calgary Stampede

When you think of the Calgary Stampede, it is hard not to picture the energy; the roar of the crowd, the thrill of the rodeo, and the shared excitement that brings the city together each year.

Now, a new addition on the grounds is bringing that experience even closer.

The North Infield Expansion is designed to enhance how people experience one of Calgary’s most iconic events. Located alongside the rodeo arena and chuckwagon track, the building will serve as the operational heart of the action, supporting judging, broadcast, and production teams, while also opening up new ways for guests to take in the spectacle as it debuts for the 2026 Calgary Stampede.

Delivered by EllisDon in a Construction Management role, the project involved overseeing all aspects of construction and coordination to bring together both operational and guest-facing spaces.

For spectators, the experience goes beyond a seat in the stands. The facility includes seven private suites, a rooftop bar, and a dedicated medical bay to support riders, staff, and guests during events.

Built for moments that matter

While the building supports operations behind the scenes, its purpose is simple: creating shared moments that last long after the midway lights fade.

The design reflects that spirit. The facility is primarily used during the Stampede and its setup period, so it has been intentionally created as a largely unheated building, with select spaces supporting essential functions.

That approach required the EllisDon team to think differently; not just about construction, but about how to ensure the building performs year-round in Calgary’s climate while supporting a short but high-impact period of use. 

It is a reminder that great projects are not only about how they are built, but how they serve the community.

Delivering at the pace of Stampede

With a timeline of less than a year, the project demanded a highly collaborative and adaptable approach. EllisDon worked closely with the Calgary Stampede and project partners to coordinate trades, manage timelines, and ensure operational requirements were fully integrated.

Constructing directly beside the rodeo arena and chuckwagon track added further complexity. Teams carefully coordinated with the Calgary Stampede to maintain safe progress while respecting the specialized track conditions required for both animal and rider safety.

The result is a project delivered through close collaboration and careful planning, aligned with the rhythms of the Stampede itself.
