As construction on The Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital and Shah Family Hospital for Women and Children reaches its next major milestone towards foundation works, one year after ground was officially broken, project partners gathered to celebrate progress with a ceremonial coin toss. The event brought together nearly 90 key partners from Trillium Health Partners and its Foundation, Infrastructure Ontario, and the ED+PCL Healthcare Partners. Also in attendance was Premier Doug Ford, who was joined by provincial leaders, including Deputy Premier and Minister of Health, Sylvia Jones and the Acting Minister of Infrastructure, Todd J. McCarthy to recognize the collective efforts driving one of the most significant healthcare infrastructure projects in Canada.
“The coin toss ceremony is a testament to the dedication and hard work of the extensive group advancing this project every day,” said Andrew Anderson, Senior Vice President & Area Manager, Toronto, EllisDon. “This moment of recognition reinforces the strong collaboration behind the project and further motivates our project team to build on this momentum alongside PCL, Trillium Health Partners, and Infrastructure Ontario as we deliver Canada’s largest hospital redevelopment.”
Over the past year, the site has undergone an impressive transformation. Passersby and nearby community members will have noticed the steady rise in activity where Canada’s most expansive hospital project is taking shape. With seven tower cranes now standing tall over the site, construction is increasingly visible, and its scale ever more apparent.
With bulk excavation works over three quarters complete, progress on foundation work is also now well underway. Crews have begun pouring concrete and installing footings that will support the hospital’s structure, marking a critical step toward bringing the facility above grade.
Behind the scenes, extensive planning and logistics are supporting the pace of work. A dedicated truck layby area and route have been established to safely manage the flow of construction vehicles, accommodating between 300 and 400 trucks entering and exiting the site each day during peak construction. Multiple on-site trailers have also been installed to support project teams, ensuring efficient coordination across workers and subtrades.
Together, these milestones reflect the strong partnership and momentum behind the project. Once complete, The Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital and Shah Family Hospital for Women and Children will significantly expand healthcare capacity in the region, delivering modern, state-of-the-art care to a growing community. As construction continues, the project team remains focused on sustaining this progress and delivering a facility that will serve generations to come.
