The Story
A critical gateway for marine traffic, the Burlington Canal Lift Bridge is being modernized to extend its lifespan and improve safety. Built in 1962, the bridge has lifted over 200,000 times for more than 400,000 vessels, supporting local and national economies.
Upgrades include replacing the lift span deck, rehabilitating approach spans, and widening sidewalks for pedestrians and cyclists. Phase 1 focused on deck replacement; Phase 2 began in April 2023 to enhance spans and sidewalks. The improvements are expected to add 50 years to the deck and sidewalk, and 30 years to the approaches.
