The Story
The Canadian High Arctic Research Station (CHARS) is a cutting-edge hub for environmental science, resource development, and technology in the heart of the Canadian Artic community of Cambridge Bay, Nunavut. Embodying a vision of self-reliant communities, this world-class research facility honors northern traditions while supporting the protection of Canada’s Arctic lands, seas, and skies. Spanning four buildings, CHARS includes a 52,500 square foot Main Research Building (MRB), equipped with advanced wet and dry labs, computer labs, public spaces, offices, and conference rooms. Complementing this is a 17,650 square foot Field Maintenance Building (FMB), a vital space for equipment storage, field maintenance, and housing the campus's mechanical and electrical systems. To support visiting scientists and researchers from around the globe, CHARS also features residential triplexes. CHARS stands as a beacon of sustainability and progress, driving scientific exploration and community vitality in one of the world’s most challenging and awe-inspiring environments.
