The Story

The Samuel Brighouse Elementary School is the future of child education, where young minds thrive and green design leads the way. Located in School District number 38 of Richmond, British Columbia, this two-story 198,000 square foot school stands as a model of sustainability with flexible, differentiated student centered spaces that inspire all learners. Constructed with durable, renewable, and recyclable materials including BC wood, the school achieved the lowest greenhouse gas emissions of any educational institution in Canada in 2011. Designed to include expansive roof overhangs, the school uniquely provides play areas protected from weather conditions, allowing students to enjoy outdoor physical activities in any season. Enhanced by a natural landscape boasting native flora and fauna, Samuel Brighouse Elementary School fosters an interconnected, community focused spirit that contributes to improved health and well-being for students and educators alike.
