The Story
Originally built in 1974, the TD Tower in downtown Halifax underwent a major transformation that included expansion, renovation, and modernization to meet today’s performance and sustainability standards. The project added three new storeys to the existing 18-floor commercial office tower and replaced the entire exterior with high-performance glazing. New high-efficiency mechanical and electrical systems were installed to reduce operating costs, while a green roof helps mitigate heat gain during summer months. The building allows individual offices to use heating, ventilation, and air conditioning after hours without running the full system, further enhancing energy efficiency. Glass awnings were also introduced to generate solar power. The renovation preserved the historic Macara-Barnstead façade on Granville Street and added amenities such as bicycle parking. Today, the TD Tower stands as Halifax’s largest Class A smart building, blending heritage with innovation.
