The Story

The Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital and Shah Family Hospital for Women and Children is Canada’s largest hospital redevelopment project, which will meet the needs of one of the country’s most diverse and rapidly growing communities. This 2.8 million square foot, 22-storey facility will replace the existing Mississauga Hospital and redefine healthcare delivery for the decades ahead.

At the heart of this redevelopment is a bold vision from Trillium Health Partners to expand access to care, modernize infrastructure, and meet the evolving needs of Mississauga and surrounding communities. The new hospital will accommodate over 950 beds and introduce Ontario’s first dedicated hospital for women and children—providing specialized, family-centred care across the full spectrum of life stages.

The campus will feature one of Canada’s largest emergency departments, advanced diagnostic imaging, a new pharmacy and clinical laboratory, and modern infection prevention and control standards. These upgrades are designed to improve patient outcomes, streamline operations, and support healthcare professionals with state-of-the-art tools and environments.

Accessibility and patient experience are central to the design. Two levels of underground parking and improved site access will ease congestion and enhance arrival and departure for patients, families, and staff. The facility will prioritize intuitive wayfinding, natural light, and healing spaces—creating an environment that supports both physical and emotional well-being.

Development and Equity

The project is being delivered through a collaborative public-private partnership model. Infrastructure Ontario and Trillium Health Partners selected ED+PCL Healthcare Partners to lead the development following an open, competitive procurement process. The partnership brings together leading expertise in design, construction, and financing to ensure the project’s success.

This redevelopment is more than a new hospital—it’s a generational investment in the future of healthcare. Furniture, Equipment & Design

The Furniture, Equipment & Design (FED) team is managing all furniture, fixtures, and equipment (FF&E) throughout the project. They are maintaining the equipment list, coordinating both In-Contract (IC) and Not-In-Contract (NIC) items, and supporting design development. FED is also leading IC procurement, overseeing NIC procurement, and managing delivery, installation, commissioning, and clinical acceptance. As a trusted partner to EllisDon and JV collaborators, FED is ensuring coordination and efficiency throughout all project stages.
