The Story

The TRIUMF Advanced Rare Isotope Laboratory (ARIEL) at the University of British Columbia is a groundbreaking facility housing a high-power superconducting electron accelerator. This advanced accelerator produces exotic isotopes, significantly enhancing Canada’s capabilities in medical diagnosis, disease treatment, and isotope research.

Key structural features include up to nine-foot-thick concrete walls for radiation protection and a four-meter tunnel connecting ARIEL to existing facilities. Mechanical innovations include radioactive venting systems, HEPA scrubbers, and a compressor building that recycles water for future campus heating. The facility also integrates high- and low-voltage electrical systems to meet its demanding power needs.
