The Bayers Lake Community Outpatient Centre (BLCOC) has been recognized through the 2026 Wayne McLellan Award of Excellence in Healthcare Facilities Management, presented by the Canadian Healthcare Engineering Society. The national award celebrates outstanding achievements in healthcare facility management, including energy efficiency, environmental stewardship, and operational excellence.

Delivered by EllisDon and maintained by EllisDon Facilities Services (EDFS), BLCOC was recognized for a collaborative energy management program led by Nova Scotia Health and EDFS. Following Substantial Completion, the teams worked together to optimize building operations through continuous monitoring, advanced analytics, and targeted system improvements.

The initiative achieved an approximate 70 per cent reduction in natural gas consumption, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions, while maintaining the stringent ventilation, indoor air quality, comfort, and reliability standards required in a healthcare environment.

A key factor in the program's success was the use of advanced fault detection & diagnostics (FD&D) software integrated with the facility's building automation system. This data-driven approach helped identify hidden inefficiencies, prioritize corrective actions, and continuously improve building performance.

This award-winning program highlights the value of long-term facility stewardship. By combining operational expertise with a data-driven approach, EDFS helped transform sustainability goals into measurable results, reducing emissions and strengthening building performance, while maintaining the high standards required in a healthcare environment.
