The Rutherford Station project delivered a full transformation of an existing station to accommodate expanded two-way, all-day service along the Barrie GO Line. Delivered under a Design-Build-Finance model, the project included demolition of the existing station and reconstruction of a new facility featuring an approximately 7,000 sq. ft. station building integrated within a six-storey, LEED Gold-certified parking structure equipped with electric vehicle charging stations, a car-counting system, and rooftop solar power generation. The scope also included rehabilitation of the existing track and west platform, construction of a new second track and east platform, and provision for a future third track to accommodate express service.

A key component of the project was a 3-kilometre rail-over-road grade separation, enabling improved operational efficiency and safety within a constrained corridor while maintaining uninterrupted rail service throughout construction. Connectivity and passenger experience were enhanced through the addition of a pedestrian bridge linking the parking structure to the east platform and tunnels connecting to the west platform, along with an upgraded bus loop, improved surface parking, and a dedicated kiss-and-ride area.

The project was executed within an environmentally sensitive area with high groundwater conditions, requiring implementation of a temporary dewatering system and close collaboration with regulatory authorities to ensure environmental protection and compliance. Extensive stakeholder coordination with rail operators, municipal authorities, and regulatory agencies was critical to maintaining active rail operations, securing phased permits, and managing noise, vibration, and environmental impacts. Overall, the Rutherford Station expansion demonstrates EllisDon’s capacity to deliver complex, multi-disciplinary transit infrastructure that integrates structural works, rail systems, and passenger-focused design within a live operational corridor.
