The Keeyask Hydroelectric Generating Station is a major clean energy infrastructure project located on the lower Nelson River in northern Manitoba, approximately 725 kilometres northeast of Winnipeg. Developed through a collaborative partnership between Manitoba Hydro and four Indigenous communities, the project represents a significant advancement in sustainable power generation and inclusive project delivery.

The development includes a 695-megawatt generating station consisting of seven turbine-generator units, along with a complex system of water control structures, earthfill dams, rockfill structures, and spillways designed to safely manage river flow and optimize long-term performance. Supporting infrastructure includes access roads, camp facilities, transmission connections, and site services necessary to sustain operations in a remote and challenging northern environment.

EllisDon played a key role in delivering critical civil works associated with the project. The scope encompassed large-scale earthworks, concrete placement, and the construction of structural components integral to the powerhouse and water retention system. Execution required careful coordination of logistics, materials, and workforce resources due to the isolated location and limited accessibility.

The project demanded innovative construction methodologies to address complex geotechnical conditions, seasonal temperature extremes, and environmentally sensitive areas. Work planning emphasized efficient sequencing, winter construction strategies, and rigorous quality control to ensure structural integrity and long-term durability. Environmental stewardship was also central to project execution, with measures implemented to minimize impact on surrounding ecosystems and respect local land use.

A defining aspect of the Keeyask project is its partnership model, which integrates Indigenous ownership and participation at every stage. This approach fostered meaningful engagement, local employment opportunities, and the incorporation of traditional knowledge into project planning and delivery.

Upon completion, the Keeyask Generating Station significantly increased Manitoba’s renewable energy capacity, supporting both provincial needs and clean energy exports. The project stood as a benchmark for collaboration, technical excellence, and sustainable infrastructure development in Canada’s hydroelectric sector.
