The Louise McKinney Riverfront Park project in Edmonton, Alberta involved the enhancement of a 12.9-hectare urban park to improve accessibility, safety, and overall functionality within a highly active and environmentally sensitive setting. The scope of work focused on the installation of an engineered timber staircase and boardwalk system integrated into an existing slope, supported by comprehensive earthworks, concrete foundations, and drainage infrastructure to ensure long-term structural stability. Key works included site preparation, excavation, backfill, and the construction of a mechanically stabilized earth trail system with geotextile reinforcement, along with concrete piles, pile caps, and cast-in-place foundations at landings. The project also incorporated an infiltration trench and sub-drain system to manage surface water and preserve the integrity of the pathway and structures, while slope stabilization measures such as surface water berms were implemented to address challenging ground conditions. Additional features included a barrier-free pathway, landscaping, street lighting, and soil replacement due to contamination. Constructed within an active public park, the project required careful coordination to maintain ongoing public access and minimize disruption, supported by clear wayfinding and temporary detours. Overall, the project demonstrates EllisDon’s ability to deliver complex park and public realm improvements, integrating structural, earthworks, and drainage solutions within a constrained and environmentally sensitive environment.
