Michael Garron Hospital - Phase 1 New Patient Care Tower Project

The Story

The Ken and Marilyn Thomson Patient Care Centre (Thomson Centre)is a transformative addition to Michael Garron Hospital (MGH), redefining how care is delivered in East Toronto. This redevelopment introduces an eight-storey tower connected to the existing facility, adding over 550,000 square feet of new space and revitalizing 100,000 square feet of existing infrastructure.

Designed to replace some of the hospital’s oldest medical, surgical, rehabilitation, and mental health spaces, the Thomson Centre is the centrepiece of MGH’s campus transformation, which is the largest redevelopment project in the hospital’s history. From adding 215 inpatient beds, two floors of new outpatient clinics, and welcoming community spaces, every detail supports healing, dignity, and connection. The project also enhances accessibility with intuitive wayfinding, inclusive washrooms, and four levels of underground parking—all contributing to a more seamless patient and visitor experience.

Development and Equity

EllisDon Capital served as the sole Developer and Financial Advisor, leading all aspects of financing and procurement. This included financial modeling, lender selection, and the structure of a two-tranche debt solution tailored to the project’s scale and complexity.

Furniture, Equipment & Design

EllisDon’s Furniture, Equipment & Design (FED) team provided end-to-end furniture, fixtures and equipment project management for the new tower. Their work included maintaining a centralized database, coordinating procurement of all In-Contract equipment, and consulting with stakeholders and design partners to ensure every item—from clinical equipment to furnishings—was accounted for and aligned with the hospital’s vision.

Energy & Digital Services

EllisDon’s Energy & Digital Services (EDS) team is delivering a robust suite of integrated technologies to support clinical operations and the patient experience. This includes simplified management of IT systems, as well as a faster and more cost-effective deployment of several key systems: a converged network infrastructure, voice and data centre solutions, real-time locating systems, security archives, and electronic wayfinding kiosks. The team is also managing the migration of the hospital’s data centre, and implementing advanced alarm and event integration engines to streamline communications and response efforts.
