The Story

Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital is a 1.6-million-square-foot facility that sets a benchmark in modern healthcare. It serves the growing community with 457 beds, nine operating theatres, a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), advanced diagnostic imaging, and smart patient rooms equipped with cutting-edge technology.

EllisDon led the design-build and facilities management teams, ensuring long-term efficiency and sustainability. Developed with input from 52 user groups and the community, the hospital delivers patient-centered care in a state-of-the-art environment. Completed under a Public-Private Partnership (P3) model, it stands as a vital resource for Oakville.

Development and Equity

EllisDon Capital Inc. played a pivotal role in the development and financing of Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. As co-developer and equity partner, EllisDon led the financial strategy and a competitive funding process that attracted strong market interest and secured a high credit rating.

The hospital’s funding model combined short- and long-term financing with committed equity investment. Throughout the project, EllisDon worked closely with Halton Healthcare Services and other stakeholders to ensure financial stability and long-term success.

Facilities Services

EllisDon Facilities Services Inc. (EDFS) was deeply involved from the proposal stage through construction, helping embed long-term operational efficiency into the hospital’s design. Co-located with the Design-Build team, EDFS influenced decisions around building systems, energy performance, and patient-centered features.

Over the 30-year maintenance term, EDFS is responsible for general management, hard facilities services, sustainability initiatives, help desk and utilities oversight, grounds maintenance, and parking operations. This integrated approach supports efficient operations and high-quality patient care.

Design and Construction

From pursuit to completion, weekly coordination meetings aligned all Design-Build team members. This collaborative structure enabled real-time decision-making and helped fast-track the construction schedule.

Energy & Digital Services

EllisDon’s Energy & Digital Services team delivered, and now manages, the hospital’s core digital infrastructure, supporting Project Co’s network, real-time locating systems (RTLS), nurse call, digital signage and integration engine. EDS is also supporting EllisDon Facilities Services with all technology lifecycle requirements (Digital Signage, Wireless Access Points, RTLS, Nurse Call, the Paging System, the Voice System, Pneumatic Tube System, etc.).

Community Engagement

An inclusive design process was central to the hospital’s development. EllisDon participated in a community involvement committee that gathered public input on key design elements such as wayfinding, landscaping, and accessibility. This early engagement ensured the final design reflected community priorities and was illustrated directly within the creation of mockup spaces.

Input from 52 user groups also shaped the hospital’s design. EllisDon led the planning and coordination of these sessions, enabling a 12-month design development period focused on meeting user needs.

Smart Technology and Patient Safety

Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital is equipped with advanced technology to enhance patient care and safety. Visitors can register via kiosks or at reception, and wireless systems support patient tracking and paging.

All 457 patient rooms are “smart” rooms, with bedside terminals that control internet access, television, lighting, and patient lifts. Advanced technology allows upwards of 20 disparate information and communications technology systems to talk to each other intelligently and seamlessly. The hospital’s infrastructure is built for adaptability, ensuring it remains future-ready.
