The Story

Embodying the theme of “Science on Display,” the Energy Environment Experimental Learning (EEEL) Building at the University of Calgary is a landmark for modern, high-calibre undergraduate education. This 250,000 square foot facility is designed to inspire hands-on, collaborative learning in energy and environmental studies while seamlessly integrating into the campus with pedestrian-friendly pathways and access to public transit. Anchored by a grand social stairway surrounded by fully glazed labs and classrooms, the building accommodates over 1,000 students with seminar rooms, study spaces, and adaptable multidisciplinary labs. A model of sustainability, the EEEL Building maximizes natural light, employs advanced systems such as buried earth tubes for fresh air intake, rainwater recycling, and cast-in-place floor piping to efficiently manage heating and cooling. Through its thoughtful design and innovative features, the facility reflects the University’s commitment to progressive science and engineering education.
