The Story

Werklund Centre – Phase I is the first stage of a two-phase redevelopment transforming Calgary’s iconic Arts Commons into a modern, accessible arts and performance destination. Led by EllisDon, the project introduces a new three-storey facility at the west end of Olympic Plaza featuring a flexible 1,000-seat theatre, two additional performance venues, rehearsal space, enhanced front- and back-of-house amenities, and an elevated connection to the existing complex. Phase I will increase overall seating capacity by up to 35%, strengthening the Centre’s ability to support a diverse range of cultural programming while contributing to the revitalization of downtown Calgary and the local creative economy. The project is targeting LEED Gold certification, reflecting a strong commitment to sustainability, energy efficiency, and long-term community value.
