The Story

The Sam Centre, located at Stampede Park's Youth Campus in Calgary, represents a modern Western heritage museum that operates year-round. The facility, named in honor of Robert Samuel Taylor, was made possible by a significant donation from his son, Calgary entrepreneur and philanthropist Don Taylor.

Constructed by EllisDon as the Construction Manager, the single-story building features a hybrid structure composed of glulam/mass timber and structural steel, along with a curtain wall system. Mass timber was selected for its environmental sustainability and impressive structural qualities, which include fire resistance, sound absorption, and seismic resilience.

EllisDon's work also encompassed necessary offsite tasks such as underground connections and external site improvements, including landscaping and the implementation of electrical systems for sidewalks and parking lots.

The design of the Sam Centre ensures that mechanical and electrical systems remain out of sight, routing main runs through service areas, embedding systems within the concrete slab, and using the raised access floor for ducting. Lighting and sprinkler systems are integrated into the glulam structure, sitting above the ceiling panels.

With an exterior envelope consisting of terracotta and aluminum cladding, Ventex louvers, and a double-glazed curtain wall, the building is topped with a standing seam aluminum roof. Roof lanterns are a distinct feature, enhancing the center with natural lighting and a contemporary aesthetic at night.

Facilities within the Sam Centre include:

  • A permanent gallery
  • A gallery for changing exhibits
  • An immersive digital experience area
  • Spaces for public gatherings, both indoors and outdoors
  • Areas designated for artifact and archival storage
