The Story

The Canadian High Arctic Research Station (CHARS) is located in Cambridge Bay, NU, a Hamlet with a population of approximately 1,600. The project consists of 4 main buildings - two triplexes, a Field Maintenance Building (FMB), and a Main Research Building (MRB). The triplexes are residential units, that house both Canadian and International teams comprised primarily of scientists and researchers. The 17,650 square feet Field Maintenance Building (FMB), serves as a storage warehouse for the program and is used for maintenance of field equipment, and housing the mechanical and electrical heart of the campus. The Main Research Building (MRB) has a gross floor area of approximately 52,500 square feet and is comprised of wet labs, dry labs, computer tabs, mechanical and electric rooms, office space, public spaces, a kitchen and dining area, as well as conference and meeting rooms. CHARS is a world-class hub for environmental science, resource development science, and technology in Canada’s North. The research station is a contribution to fulfill Canada’s vision for the North, such as empowered, self-reliant individuals living in healthy, vital communities. The project also honours the northern tradition of respect for the land and the environment and will allow for the patrol and protection of Canada in the Arctic seas and sky. The project is currently seeking LEED Gold certification.
