Project Description

EllisDon was the Construction Manager for the Centennial College - Library and Academic Facility. This four-storey building contains a 200 seat lecture theatre, stadium seating classrooms and a cafe on the ground floor. The project also includes classrooms and reading areas on the second floor, a library on the third floor and library study areas and administrative offices on the fourth floor. An enclosed bridge was also constructed, connecting the new building to the existing building on campus. New parking lots, roadways and landscaping were constructed throughout the campus.

The new building was tied into the existing boiler house and electrical switchboard. Five new AHUs, one new chiller, a new cooling tower and two new boiler stacks were provided. Radiant heating is used around the perimeter of each floor level to supplement the heating of the building in the winter, and a snow melting system is used outside at the main entrance. The electrical work consists of a UPS/inverter system, metering systems, lighting control system, security/lockdown and CCTV systems, audio/visual systems and communication systems.

The project achieved LEED® Gold with green roofs, a four-storey bio-filter wall in the atrium, and a cistern that collects the rainwater from the roof drains, which is used to flush the urinals and water closets.

One of the challenges of the project was to tie into the existing services and perform the work in the heart of the existing busy campus without impacting the operations of the college.
