The Story
The Fleet Maintenance Facility Cape Breton (“FMFCB”) is a strategic asset of the Royal Canadian Navy that supports the operations of the Pacific Fleet within Maritime Forces Pacific. The FMFCB Shop Consolidation Project began in the 1990's to consolidate, transform, and modernize the industrial facilities at Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt’s Dockyard. The Department of National Defence/Defence Construction Canada has been delivering the project in multiple phases over the last fifteen years.
EllisDon and our joint venture partner, Kinetic Construction, partnered to provide Construction Management Services for the final phase of the Fleet Maintenance Facility modernization at the Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt on Vancouver Island. This contract incorporated pre-construction and construction services for the new construction and renovation of the facility, which also included site decontamination and the deconstruction of several existing buildings. This was all carried out while regular operations of the facility continued. The project aimed to replace antiquated, outdated and deficient industrial facilities and enabled a critical transformation and modernization of the naval shipyard maintenance facility.
This $173 million contract includes pre-construction and construction phase services for the new construction, fit-up, renovation, deconstruction and site decontamination, all to be carried out while regular operations continue at the maintenance facility. The aim of the overall project is to replace and renovate antiquated, outdated and deficient industrial facilities (totaling 370,000 SF), so as to enable a fundamentally critical transformation and modernization of the naval shipyard maintenance facility.
