The Story

EllisDon was the Construction Manager for the George Brown College – Waterfront Development Block 5, adjacent to Toronto Harbour. The site is bounded by Lake Ontario and the Queen’s Quay, between Jarvis and Sherbourne Street. This new construction consisted of 350,000 square feet of floor area and includes health, science and regular classroom space. The building also features retail space at the ground level and 350 below grade parking stalls. There are plans to connect to an adjacent block with an overhead bridge and underground tunnel.

Achievement

2012 Project Achievement Award

The design and construction of the Waterfront Development adhered to guidelines outlined within the LEED® Canada NC-1.0 rating system and George Brown College incorporated further renewable energy initiatives. The project has achieved LEED® Gold Certification.

EllisDon’s Information and Communication Technology group managed the schedule, design, tender and the procurement of all network equipment for the site in order to drive a fully converged network at the new state-of-the-art facility. All building systems communicate over an IP network and are managed by a central management system, which acts as a central nervous system that optimizes building performance, reduces the building’s carbon footprint, and provides services and features that enhance the overall student and staff experience.

The performance of the EllisDon team under these challenging construction conditions was exemplary. Much of the construction documentation process was done on a contractor design-assist basis. EllisDon’s leadership, flexibility and response time has proven to be the key reason we have remained on track and on budget.
