The Story

As part of Guelph’s award-wining Community Energy Initiative, the city of Guelph partnered with Guelph Hydro Inc and its subsidiary Envida Community Energy Inc. to implement a plan for a city-wide thermal energy network that allows neighbourhoods to share a sustainable heating and cooling system; this plan will help ensure that the city of Guelph uses less energy in 25 years than it does today and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. To accomplish this goal, Guelph Hydro Inc. and Envida Community Energy Inc. contracted EllisDon to provide a Temporary Central Heating and Cooling Plant.

This Design-Build project is important to the city and its residents since the plant plays an important role in meeting the city’s future needs, while also reducing the environmental impact of power generator. The plant has an emergency back-up 350 KW generator that is operational for 24/7 and 365 days a year. This project, aside from providing energy to the Guelph’s residents, created local jobs and kept more energy dollars in Guelph.
