The Story
This 50 hectare solar energy farm was constructed on an aged tobacco farm in Southwestern Ontario. The project produces 14.2 MW DC of ground-mounted solar energy, through a 17 km underground transmission line, that connects to a new high voltage sub-station, and 50,000 solar panels that are a standard size of 1.8 m by 1 m. The numerous rows of solar panels are mounted on aluminum racks and fastened to galvanized steel posts with helical screws.
EllisDon procured all materials and equipment, including the inverters, revenue meters, transformers, weather stations, and monitoring systems. They also provided the engineering, procurement, construction and final commissioning for this project. The owner purchased the solar panels.
This power generation facility supplies power through the Ontario Power Authority’s Feed-In Tariff Program and connects to the provincial electrical grid, supplying clean, renewable energy for approximately 1,500 homes.
