The Story

This Infrastructure Ontario Build-Finance project was awarded as one contract to complete renovations for two hospitals. The schedules were critical and had to be coordinated between both hospitals, with the Ivey Eye Clinic moving from Victoria to St. Joseph’s and the Neonatal and Maternity departments moving from St. Joseph’s to Victoria. For the Victoria Hospital aspect, this involved the construction of approximately 470,000 sq. ft. of interior fit-up in the North Tower Shelled space for new, state-of-the-art facilities. In addition, approximately 130,000 sq. ft. of the existing facilities were renovated. The finished space increased capacity by approximately 90 beds in this phase and accommodated a new clinic, inpatient and administrative areas for Children’s Hospital, women’s care, including a new birthing centre and neonatal intensive care program (being transferred from St. Joseph’s Hospital), child, adolescent and adult inpatient and outpatient mental health care, adult medical/surgical inpatient care, and specialized clinical laboratories. For St. Joseph’s Ambulatory Care renovations, the project consisted of over 100,000 sq. ft. of demolition followed by new interior finishes and mechanical/electrical upgrades to the Endoscopy, Diabetes, Endocrinology, Ambulatory Gynecology, Respiratory Therapy, Ears, Nose and Throat (ENT) department and Ophthalmology Clinic. It also included renovating a kitchen and cafeteria and financial services office space. These spaces made up 106,000 sq. ft. of renovations.
