The Story
EllisDon constructed the 6,000 SF, single-storey Victoria Park Pavilion that contains a public skating change area, an attached garage, and club space for the Edmonton Speed Skating Association.
Although the size of the facility is relatively small, there were many complexities in constructing this facility, such as the installation of a geothermal ground loop heat exchanger (as there were no existing natural gas lines on site), as well as hazardous materials (asbestos) abatement. Finally, the project site was surrounded by protected trees, therefore the Forestry Department for the City of Edmonton required the team to protect them and report any accidental damage or removal (which would result in a $100,000 fine). This required EllisDon to meticulously coordinate the work around the surrounding trees and still deliver the project on-time.
