EllisDon, as part of a Design-Build joint venture, designed and built the 4.2km long vivaNext bus rapidway in Vaughan along Highway 7 from Highway 400 east to Bowes Road. This segment of the rapidway is part of a larger strategy to connect York Region with the Greater Toronto Area via the Toronto Transit Commission and other transit systems, and improve the local economy by providing a platform for future growth. The rapidway required extensive amounts of road widening in order to accommodate the dedicated centre bus lanes. As a result of the widening, the project also involved utility relocations, a two-lane widening of the existing 150-meter span of the MacMillan Bridge, the construction of culvert headwalls, road reconstruction, new storm systems, and over 1,600 meters of retaining walls. In order to allow the transit system to operate efficiently, the project also included the installation of transit signal priority systems, GPS-equipped buses, fare machines and security surveillance in order to improve customer satisfaction and safety. This segment consisted of four glazed structural steel platform shelters and the large Vaughan Metropolitan Centre (VMC) Station at Highway 7 and Millway Street. The VMC Station ties into Vaughan’s new subway station at the terminus of the Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension.
