The Story

The new Wedgewood Park Aquatic Centre is a 73,750-square-foot multi-use recreational facility that replaced the existing Wedgewood Community Centre. This new facility has upgraded the recreation and fitness opportunities for its community in St. John’s, Newfoundland by being three times as large and twice as high as the existing facility. Program elements will include a 25 metre lane lap pool, leisure pool, gymnasium, fitness room, outdoor playground, daycare, senior’s and youth centre, and several multi-purpose spaces designed to meet the needs of the community. Additionally, the new facility will have office spaces, and visitor viewing areas. The new centre includes many sustainability initiatives, and will pursue a Green Globes rating. It incorporates energy efficient technology, including a geothermal heat source combined with a top of the line heat recovery system. The unique design, which incorporates green space, modern materials and cutting edge structural engineering and design will create an extremely efficient system that will save money in operating costs and reduce the City’s energy consumption.
