EllisDon’s Net-Zero Science-based Emissions Targets Approved

Mississauga, ON May 11, 2023 — As a leader in the construction services industry, EllisDon is proud to announce their Net-Zero target has been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). This independent global organization assesses whether corporate emission reduction targets are consistent the Paris Agreement and current climate science.

“Our organization is committed to mitigating the impacts of our business on the environment, and to reducing the effects of climate change. We believe that only what is measured can be managed, and our approach has now been confirmed to be in line with a science-based approach to carbon reduction,” said Jody Becker, Chief Strategy Officer, Executive Vice President Infrastructure Services & Technology, EllisDon. “EllisDon’s leadership in sustainability through measurement, management, reduction, and innovation will create lasting change for the communities in which we work.”

The SBTi defines and promotes best practices in science-based target setting, offers resources and guidance to reduce barriers to adoption, and independently assesses and approves companies’ targets. They are focused on accelerating companies across the world, in order to reduce global emissions by 50% before 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions before 2050.

EllisDon has committed to reducing absolute Scope 1, 2, and 3 (their operations and entire value chain) greenhouse gas emissions by 42% by 2030 and, at minimum, 90% by 2050 from a 2021 base year.

EllisDon is committed to finding innovative and achievable solutions to both reduce the company’s carbon footprint and set new industry standards. As part of EllisDon’s climate commitment, they will be active in:

  • Driving to zero emissions across our business operations: Minimizing emissions from construction sites, assets, and products and services. This will include implementing efficiency measures and/or switching fuels to renewable resources for fleet vehicles, heavy equipment, and buildings.
  • Driving to zero emissions in materials procured: leveraging supply chain, trade partners and industry organizations to reduce the embodied carbon of the materials that go into the buildings and infrastructure that we build, with a focus on structural materials, including concrete, steel, and timber.
  • Driving to zero emissions in the operation of the projects built: help EllisDon clients to target and deliver near-zero emissions buildings by employing the entire building services value chain to provide innovative, achievable, and cost-effective solutions.

EllisDon is committed to addressing the carbon impact of their business operations and to being leaders in the pursuit of a low-carbon economy. This commitment represents a significant opportunity for collaboration among all parties who comprise the construction and operations supply chain, including clients, general contractors, subcontractors, suppliers, and partners. EllisDon is dedicated to leading change across the industry
