Shaping Young Minds with LEGO: Creativity, Confidence, and Community

The LEGO Construction Workshops pilot has officially wrapped up, leaving a lasting impact on two grade four classes in Ontario. Over six weeks, elementary school students built vibrant LEGO communities, developing problem-solving skills and confidence in their ability to make decisions. By fostering creativity and independent thinking, this initiative empowered young learners to trust their instincts and tackle challenges head-on.

“It was incredibly rewarding to see how the students approached their tasks with curiosity and critical thinking,” said Isabel Rocha, a teacher with the Peel District School Board, Ontario. “They adjusted their ideas and strategies on the go. The communication, teamwork, and collective imagination that came out of that process was very fun to witness.”

The students’ communities varied in goals, amenities, size and demographics, but the core was the same: creative communities and ecosystems that considered all the needs of those who live there.

“This program reinforced that students can build, create, collaborate, and express their thinking in hands-on, imaginative ways,” said Isabel. “It was great to see how much depth and critical thinking emerged through play and construction. The students were fully engaged, and they took pride in their work because it reflected their own ideas and creativity.”

"This is what drives us. At EllisDon, giving back to our communities has always been a core part of who we are. We're constantly exploring new and meaningful ways to make a difference—and this initiative is one of those unique approaches,” said Mohammed Al-Salem, EllisDon’s Community Benefit and Relations Manager, EllisDon. “By engaging a new audience early on, we’re helping to open doors to careers in construction in a fresh and inspiring way. The fact that we can align this with their educational journey makes it even more impactful."

Initiatives like this highlight EllisDon’s commitment to giving back and equipping the next generation with valuable skills through engaging, hands-on experiences. The impact of these programs extends far beyond the classroom—sparking curiosity, confidence, and, perhaps, a future in construction.
